NBA 2K appears to be hinting at a return to college basketball games, just as EA Sports officially confirmed the revival of its own college hoops franchise. Both publishers have a legacy in this space, though their respective series have been dormant for well over a decade.

Yesterday, EA Sports made headlines by announcing plans to bring back college basketball, sparking excitement among longtime fans of NCAA Basketball 10, the last entry released back in 2009.

But it seems EA isn’t the only one eyeing a comeback. Just hours after EA’s announcement, a fan on X (formerly Twitter) tagged the official NBA 2K account, suggesting 2K should also return to college basketball. The response from 2K was short but telling: “The campus has been quiet for too long” — a clear nod that something may be brewing behind the scenes.

As per old reports by Insider Gaming, both EA and 2K have been discussing the return of college basketball games internally for some time. While there’s no official word on where 2K stands in the development process, sources say groups within the company have been "pushing heavily" to make it happen.

It’s worth noting that 2K’s last college basketball game, College Hoops 2K8, came out way back in 2007, while EA’s final entry, NCAA Basketball 10, was released in 2009. Since then, fans have been left without a proper college hoops title — until now, it seems.

This renewed interest comes at a time when college sports video games are regaining traction. EA Sports’ recent success with College Football 25 and the growing acceptance of NIL (name, image, and likeness) regulations have created a more favorable environment for college-themed games to make a comeback.

Adding fuel to the speculation, 2K and the NBA recently signed a new multi-year global partnership. While this primarily supports their flagship NBA series, it could also open doors for related ventures — like a college basketball game.

If 2K decides to move forward, the result could be a major showdown between two industry giants. With EA aiming for a 2028-2029 release, fans might see a renewed rivalry play out not just on the real court but in the virtual one too.
