Ubisoft is set to roll out a major update for Assassin’s Creed Shadows on June 25, bringing a fresh wave of content — including a new ally, gameplay tweaks, and a highly requested difficulty mode.
Among the highlights is the addition of Rufino, a new recruitable character voiced by Robbie Daymond, known for his work in Critical Role. Interestingly, Rufino was originally created for a promotional one-shot tied to Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Now, he officially joins the game's cast, expanding the story and potentially offering new strategic advantages.
Rufino sports a Portuguese-inspired doublet and a flamboyant moustache, hinting at a distinct personality. While Ubisoft hasn’t revealed full details on his gameplay impact, players can expect him to be more than just a decorative addition. As a recruitable ally — and one of only a handful in the game — there's potential for Rufino to assist in combat, maybe even be open to romantic interactions, as seen with other companions. However, it remains to be seen how deeply he's integrated into the story and gameplay systems.
This isn’t the first time Assassin’s Creed Shadows has introduced post-launch content. The game previously added a short mission tied to Dead by Daylight, but those story drops have generally been brief, clocking in at around 20 minutes of playtime. Rufino’s arrival could mark a shift toward more substantial post-launch support.
The upcoming Title Update 1.0.6 includes several other noteworthy features. Chief among them is the addition of Nightmare difficulty, a new mode that promises to test even the most experienced assassins.
Alongside that, players can look forward to new gameplay immersion options, tweaks to open-world enemy alert systems, and a popular community request: the ability to toggle headgear visibility during cutscenes.
According to Ubisoft, there’s even more on the horizon. Future content updates will include a New Game+ mode and further crossover missions. Before the year ends, the game is expected to receive its first major expansion, titled Claws of Awaji, which picks up from the main story’s conclusion and introduces a new region of Japan for players to explore.
