Mundfish’s retro-futuristic shooter, Atomic Heart, has officially surpassed 10 million players, marking a major milestone for the 2023 debut title.
“What started as a dream has become a reality beyond anything we imagined,” Mundfish said in a statement. “This achievement is the result of our team’s relentless dedication, bold vision, and unwavering focus on quality. But most importantly, thanks to our amazing community. Your passion, creativity, and support have truly brought Atomic Heart to life.”
The 10 million figure represents players and not direct sales—boosted by its availability on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox, as well as Xbox Game Pass.
A Soviet-Punk Shooter That Found Its Audience
Released in February 2023, Atomic Heart is a first-person shooter with RPG elements, set in an alternate version of 1955 Soviet Union. Players control Major Sergey Nechaev (P-3), a special operative sent to investigate a robot uprising at Facility 3826, a major scientific complex.
Its world draws heavy inspiration from BioShock, featuring a mix of eerie Soviet architecture, open-world areas, and puzzle-heavy underground labs.
The game’s combat system combines conventional and energy weapons, melee options, and elemental powers like telekinesis and cryo-jets, all controlled via a sentient glove.
Players praised its fast-paced gameplay, creative puzzles, and visually rich environments, even as some criticized repetitive quest design and underwhelming voice acting.
Despite the critiques, Atomic Heart racked up over 60 industry awards, especially for its visual and artistic achievements.
The game was reportedly developed on a budget of around $20 million.
Post-Launch Support and a Fourth DLC on the Way
Proof of its ongoing popularity is the game’s active post-launch roadmap, with three major story-driven DLCs already released:
Annihilation Instinct (August 2023)
Trapped in Limbo (February 2024)
Enchantment Under the Sea (January 2025)
A fourth and final DLC is currently in development, which is expected to conclude the game’s twisting narrative. Mundfish has not yet revealed the release date. The studio has also hinted at a possible sequel, but no further details are available.
Moreover, Mundfish is launching a new initiative called Mundfish Powerhouse, a support service for developers and investors looking to bring “standout projects to market.”
