Game Freak's Beast of Reincarnation is almost here, and it is bringing a side of the Pokémon studio that fans have never really seen before.
What is Beast of Reincarnation actually about?
This is an action RPG, not a monster-catching game, and that alone makes it a big swing for Game Freak. Players step into the boots of Emma, a warrior making her way through a cursed, post-apocalyptic version of Japan.
She is not alone though. Her dog companion Koo tags along for the ride, and together they form what a lot of people are now calling a one person, one dog action RPG.
The tone here is dark. There is no cozy exploration or friendly creature collecting. Instead, you get a grim world, high stakes, and combat that has already drawn comparisons to Clair Obscur and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. Massive boss fights sit at the center of the experience, and the mix of real time action with more tactical, command based elements looks like the game's biggest hook.
Set in the year 4026, the story follows Emma as an outcast Sealer who wields blight and plant based powers alongside her blade. The larger plot revolves around hunting down mythical creatures known as Nushi and eventually confronting the Beast of Reincarnation itself. Visually and narratively, previews have pointed to Studio Ghibli influences, with Princess Mononoke coming up often in comparisons.
Gameplay
Combat blends real-time swordplay with strategic layers. You control Emma directly, handling parries, vine and plant abilities, and ranged options, while also building her out through gear, skill trees, and spirit stones. That opens the door to different playstyles, whether you want to go aggressive, stealthy, or lean into ranged combat.
Koo is not just there for company either. You can issue commands to your companion mid-fight.
Difficulty is adjustable too, so if the Sekiro comparisons have you worried, there is a Story Mode option with more forgiving parry timing.
