Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty: Black Ops II have officially launched on PS4 and PS5. Both games are available right now, and they mark the first time these classic titles have made their way to Sony's current and previous generation consoles.
These aren't remasters. They aren't remakes either. Treyarch and port developer Iron Galaxy have kept things as close to the originals as possible, aside from whatever benefits come naturally from running on newer hardware. If you loved these games back in the day, you're getting the exact same experience, just on a new platform.
How much do the games cost?
Pricing is pretty straightforward, though there's a decent PS Plus discount involved. Here's the breakdown:
Black Ops or Black Ops II (standalone): $39.99 each
Black Ops or Black Ops II Season Pass: $29.99 each
PS Plus members get each game for $20 during the launch sale
PS Plus members get each Season Pass for $9.89 during the launch sale
Buying both games and both season passes at full price: $139.96 total
There's no bundle that combines both games together, so you'll need to purchase them separately either way.
Fans should keep a few things in mind: there are no graphical upgrades, so don’t expect a visual overhaul. There’s also no 120 FPS support and no FOV sliders. PS4 and PS5 versions run on separate servers too, so cross-play between the two isn't happening.
Xbox, PC, and Nintendo Switch owners are out of luck for now. There's no confirmed timeline for these platforms getting similar treatment, and Switch 2 rumors haven't been confirmed either.
The good news is that both ports carry over the full experience fans remember. Treyarch confirmed last month that each game includes its campaign, multiplayer, and Zombies modes.
Black Ops originally launched in 2010 (on PS3, Wii, PC, and Xbox 360), while Black Ops II followed in 2012 (on PS3, Wii U, PC, and Xbox 360). Both are widely regarded as some of the most influential entries in the franchise, with Black Ops II in particular often credited as the game that helped shape Call of Duty's competitive esports scene.
Both games can be played on PC through Steam, and the Xbox 360 versions work on Xbox One and Xbox Series X thanks to backward compatibility.
Looking ahead, Activision's next major release is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, arriving October 23 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2, and PC.
