Gearbox Software has officially revealed the PC system requirements for Borderlands 4. Set to launch on September 12, 2025, this next chapter in the beloved looter-shooter franchise looks to be one of the most demanding PC titles of the year.

Both the minimum and recommended requirements make it clear: if you’re running older or mid-tier hardware, you might want to start considering an upgrade—especially your CPU.

Minimum Requirements That Aren’t So “Minimum”

Here’s what you’ll need at the very least to run Borderlands 4:

  • OS: Windows 10/11

  • Processor: Intel Core i7-9700 or AMD Ryzen 7 2700X

  • Memory: 16 GB RAM

  • Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 or AMD RX 5700 XT

  • Storage: 100 GB SSD

  • Additional Notes: Requires 8 CPU cores and 8 GB VRAM

That’s right—eight cores minimum just to get into the game. And that’s where the issue lies. According to Steam’s May 2025 hardware survey, over 50% of Steam users still use CPUs with six cores or fewer. That means more than half the platform’s user base technically won’t meet the minimum CPU requirement to run the game.

Recommended Requirements Raise the Bar Even Higher

If you’re aiming for the ideal experience, here’s what Gearbox recommends:

  • Processor: Intel Core i7-12700 or AMD Ryzen 7 5800X

  • Memory: 32 GB RAM

  • Graphics: RTX 3080 or RX 6800 XT

  • VRAM: At least 12 GB

  • Storage: Still 100 GB on SSD

Clearly, Borderlands 4 is built for powerful rigs—and it’s no surprise, given that it’s running on Unreal Engine 5, known for its cutting-edge visuals and high-fidelity effects.

A Potential Barrier for Budget Gamers

While high-end users won’t have much trouble meeting these requirements, many gamers on mid-range or budget setups may struggle, particularly due to the CPU demands. Most mainstream processors with strong gaming performance—like the Ryzen 5 5600 or Intel i5-12400—only have six cores, leaving a big chunk of potential players out.

It’s a surprising move considering many other big AAA titles in 2025 are still accommodating six-core CPUs at minimum. This raises the question: Is the performance boost from the eight-core requirement really necessary, or is it just a side effect of ambitious design?

The Clock is Ticking, But There’s Still Time

Thankfully, Borderlands 4 doesn’t arrive until September 12, leaving a few months for those who want to upgrade.

Despite the steep requirements, anticipation remains high for Borderlands 4, which features an entirely new planet, a fresh cast of Vault Hunters—including Vex the Siren—and a massive arsenal of loot-packed mayhem.

The game will be available on PC, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and even the Nintendo Switch 2.

As for pricing, Borderlands 4 will retail for $69.99, with a Deluxe Edition at $99.99 and a Super Deluxe Edition going for $129.99.

So, will the visual upgrades and gameplay innovations justify the need for higher-end specs? We’ll find out in just a few months.
