Brazil is starting a process to officially regulate its fast-growing esports industry. The government has opened a public consultation period where anyone interested can share their thoughts on how competitive gaming should be managed in the country.
According to Giovanni Rocco, National Secretary of Sports Betting and Economic Development of Sports, the main goal is to create modern regulations that include successful approaches used in other countries around the world.
Brazil currently ranks as the world's fifth-largest esports market, giving it significant economic power and social influence in the global gaming community. As per government statements, this move to create regulations shows Brazil's commitment to being open and including public input in this rapidly growing industry.
The timing of this regulatory effort coincides with broader changes in Brazil's gambling laws. After sports betting was made legal in late 2023, authorized betting operations began at the start of 2025. Industry analysts suggest Brazil is positioned to become an important player in the worldwide legal betting market.
Esports, which particularly appeals to younger audiences, is expected to attract substantial betting activity. Reports indicate that licensed betting companies will likely see significant money wagered on esports events.
Esports organizations and game publishers have also become more open to betting partnerships. This shift was recently demonstrated by Riot Games, which will allow betting sponsors into its League of Legends and Valorant competitive circuits starting in 2025.
The public consultation period will remain open until March 5th, giving stakeholders throughout the country an opportunity to help shape the future of esports in Brazil.
