Newzoo has released its gaming performance data for May 2025, covering six key markets — the US, UK, Germany, France, Spain, and Italy — and as usual, the charts saw a mix of fresh hits, returning giants, and a few surprising resurgence.

Among the standout new entries was Elden Ring: Neightrein, which made a strong debut at No.4 on the overall revenue chart. This expansion to FromSoftware's acclaimed RPG brought players back into the Lands Between with new areas, lore, and boss encounters. While the game's performance is solid, reviews have been a bit mixed, so it’ll be interesting to see whether it keeps its momentum or drops off in the coming months.

Also making headlines was Doom: The Dark Ages, which debuted at No.9 in overall revenue. Since it launched on day one via Xbox Game Pass, over 95% of its full-price sales actually came from PlayStation and Steam users. That said, Xbox players still made up 72% of the game’s active users in May, showing that while most of the revenue came from elsewhere, Game Pass was key in getting people to jump in.

Meanwhile, Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time quietly grabbed No.20 on the revenue list. While that might sound like a low spot, it’s actually a solid win for this cozy RPG-life sim hybrid. The game sold over one million copies worldwide, with 500,000 units flying off shelves within just the first three days. On Nintendo Switch, it made an impressive No.3 debut for platform-specific revenue — not bad at all.

Then there’s Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, which is showing some serious staying power. After debuting at No.13 in April, it climbed up to No.8 in May. That kind of upward trend is pretty rare for premium titles after launch. According to Newzoo, it’s a great example of how strong game quality and word-of-mouth can keep players coming back — even in a crowded release season.

Over on the nostalgia front, Grand Theft Auto V saw a noticeable spike in player activity — no doubt helped by the release of the second trailer for GTA 6. The trailer itself shattered records, and all that hype seems to have dragged a fresh wave of players (and old fans) back to Los Santos. Even after all these years, Rockstar’s classic still isn’t going anywhere.

And speaking of surprises, Star Wars Battlefront 2 (yes, the 2017 one!) shot up to No.15 on the engagement chart. Newzoo credits this sudden rise to a mix of Star Wars Day discounts, community excitement, and a new wave of attention from streamers. Interestingly, 86% of players diving into the game were returning fans, proving that even older titles can find new life when the timing’s right.
