Netflix is bringing the popular mobile game Clash of Clans to screens as an animated series called "CLASH," now in pre-production.
The new show will center around the Barbarian character, who must gather a team of misfits to protect their village.
Developer Supercell confirmed the adaptation with a YouTube teaser released on May 20th. The announcement comes shortly after the studio celebrated its 15th anniversary.
A Star-Studded Creative Team
Fletcher Moules has been chosen as the showrunner for the project. Moules has previous experience with the Clash universe, having directed animated YouTube videos for the game. His resume also includes work on Netflix animations such as "Agent Elvis" and "Entergalactic," according to the announcement.
The writing team will be led by Ron Weiner, who brings impressive credentials from popular shows like "Arrested Development," "Silicon Valley," "30 Rock," and "Futurama."
Vancouver-based ICON Creative Studio will handle the animation work. This studio has previously contributed to Disney projects including "Monsters at Work" and "Disney Jr.'s Ariel."
John Derderian, Vice President of Animation Series at Netflix, expressed enthusiasm about the project, noting that Clash has been "a global gaming phenomenon for over a decade" with its unique blend of humor, action, and memorable characters that make it perfect for an animated adaptation.
Curtis Lelash, Head of Film and TV at Supercell, also shared his excitement about the project: "We're thrilled to be working with Netflix and this creative team to bring the world of 'Clash' to life. Think epic battles, immaculate Barbarian mustaches, and the kind of humor our players know and love."
Lelash added that fans have been requesting a Clash series "forever," and the company is "beyond excited to finally say: It's happening!"
Supercell’s Bigger Entertainment Strategy
The move aligns with Supercell's recent expansion plans beyond gaming, which became apparent last month when the company posted a job listing for a senior film and TV development executive in Los Angeles.
Since their launch on iOS and Android in 2012, the Clash of Clans and Clash Royale franchises have achieved remarkable success, with a combined total of 4 billion downloads and 180 billion gameplay hours worldwide.
Part of Netflix’s Gaming Adaptation Wave
"CLASH" joins Netflix's growing collection of video game adaptations, which includes projects based on "Assassin's Creed," "Sifu," "Gears of War," "BioShock," "Exploding Kittens," and "Cyberpunk: Edgerunners," among others yet to be announced.
While specific details about the release date remain unknown, fans of the mobile game can look forward to what Supercell promises will be an "epic, hilarious and more than a little unhinged" adaptation of the beloved game universe.
