Indie publisher Devolver Digital has announced it will release a new game on May 26, 2026—the exact same day as the long-awaited launch of Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto 6.
The audacious move came shortly after Rockstar finally confirmed GTA 6’s release date. Devolver responded swiftly on X (formerly Twitter) with a defiant message: “You can’t escape us. May 26, 2026 it is then.”
This announcement wasn't completely unexpected. Devolver Digital had previously promised to launch a game whenever Rockstar announced the GTA 6 release date. Now that the date is set, the indie publisher is staying true to its word.
The game in question remains a mystery. Devolver, based in Texas, is best known for offbeat, critically acclaimed titles like Hotline Miami, Enter the Gungeon, Katana Zero, and Cult of the Lamb. Fans are now speculating whether the company is teasing a sequel to one of these hits—or something entirely new.
Notably, Enter the Gungeon 2 is already slated for 2026, though it hasn’t been confirmed as the May 26 release. Meanwhile, Human Fall Flat 2—another upcoming Devolver-published game—has been ruled out for that date by its developer, No Brakes Games.
A Risky but Strategic Play
While most publishers avoid launching games near AAA juggernauts like GTA 6, Devolver’s decision appears deliberate. The company’s unorthodox marketing and rebellious tone have long set it apart.
Devolver’s announcement has already gained serious traction online, drawing over 1.6 million views on X and sparking debate across the industry. Many fans applauded the boldness, with some even pledging to play Devolver’s game over GTA 6.
