Story and Gameplay

Players step into the role of a young fisherman’s son from Estard, the only known island in the world. Alongside childhood friends, he discovers ancient stone fragments that unlock time travel to the past. Each journey restores lost continents sealed away by dark forces, gradually reshaping the present and revealing a larger threat.

Gameplay remains rooted in classic turn-based RPG mechanics but introduces modern updates. The diorama-style 3D art direction, inspired by Akira Toriyama’s designs, gives the world a handcrafted look. The new “Moonlighting” system allows leveling two vocations simultaneously, creating hybrid skills. Combat is faster, with auto-battle options, instant wins against weaker foes, and uninterrupted turns. These changes streamline progression while keeping deep job systems and monster recruitment intact.

Reception

Square Enix rebuilt the game from the ground up, aiming to balance nostalgia with accessibility. Early impressions have been strong, with advanced access peaking at 11,000 players on Steam and 94% positive reviews. The game currently holds an 83% score on Metacritic.

IGN rated the remake 7/10, praising its improved pacing compared to the slow original but noting that some adjustments for newcomers may feel like compromises. The review called it a “fine third iteration” that celebrates the series’ 40th anniversary. GameSpot also gave it 7/10, describing it as a trimmed-down version of a bloated classic, appreciating the streamlined mechanics but still finding the anthology-style storytelling “overlong.”

Switch 2 and Steam Deck impressions highlight smooth performance and visuals, with reviewers noting that the remake addresses many complaints from the original while carefully balancing modernization and nostalgia.

Consensus

  • Strengths: Better pacing, modern visuals, smoother performance, and quality-of-life upgrades.

  • Weaknesses: Story remains lengthy, and some compromises may disappoint veteran fans.
