Epic Games has filed a trademark complaint against South Korean studio EPIDGames, arguing that the company’s name is too similar to its own.
The issue arose after EPIDGames applied to register its English trademark in preparation for the overseas release of its upcoming mobile game Trickcal Re:VIVE, as reported by ThisIsGame (via Automaton).
According to EPIDGames’ statement, Epic’s position is that the two names are almost identical, differing by just a single letter, which could cause confusion among players and consumers. Epic’s concern reportedly lies in both the visual and phonetic similarity of the names.
Founded in 2013, EPIDGames has been active for over a decade and sees the objection as either a misunderstanding or simply a standard trademark protection move from Epic. Still, the studio admits the dispute could drag on into a lengthy legal fight, something they are wary of given their limited resources. “For small and medium-sized game developers already struggling with development costs alone, this is a difficult issue to manage,” the studio noted. Making matters more challenging, they revealed that Epic has hired one of Korea’s top law firms for the case.
The timing couldn’t be worse for EPIDGames, which is currently working on expanding into the global market. Despite the pressure, the studio says it will proceed with its legal team to resolve the matter.
Trickcal Re:VIVE is set for an overseas release in Q4 2025. Its Korean version has already made a strong impression, holding a five-star Google Play rating from 35,000 reviews and surpassing 500,000 downloads.
