Exit 8 Surpasses Two Million Sales as Horror Hit Expands Across Platforms and Media

Exit 8 has officially crossed two million units sold, marking another milestone for publisher PLAYISM and developer KOTAKE CREATE.

The psychological horror indie doubled its sales in less than a year, jumping from one million copies sold in August 2024 to two million in 2025.

The game isn’t your typical horror experience. Instead of relying on jump scares, Exit 8 plays with subtlety and atmosphere. Players find themselves wandering through a dimly lit Japanese subway tunnel, stuck in a cycle of endless corridor loops. The only objective is to reach Exit No. 8, but each loop hides potential anomalies — small, eerie details like reversed reflections, flickering lights, or NPCs acting unnervingly strange. Spot one and turn around. Miss it or make the wrong call? You’re thrown back to loop zero and must start again.

Blending elements of a walking simulator with puzzle-driven horror, Exit 8 keeps each playthrough short, lasting anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour. Yet its simplicity hides a deeper edge. Many fans interpret the game’s structure as a metaphor for burnout, isolation, or the monotony of modern life, with the creeping anomalies serving as cracks in reality.

Since its debut on PC via Steam in November 2023, the game has steadily expanded. It launched on Nintendo Switch in April 2024, PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 in August 2024, Xbox Series X|S in January 2025, and iOS/Android in March 2025.

Most recently, it arrived on the Nintendo Switch 2 in August 2025, broadening its reach even further.

On Steam, Exit 8 holds a “Very Positive” user rating with 93% approval from over 9,000 reviews, according to SteamDB data.

Its success has already spawned a follow-up. Earlier this year, Platform 8 released, shifting the setting to a looping metro train where players face a fresh round of uncanny anomalies.

Beyond games, the franchise is also stepping into film. A live-action movie adaptation premiered in Japanese theaters this past Friday, and international audiences can expect a western release in early 2026.
