Ubisoft is making significant changes to its next Far Cry games, with reports indicating that the company has rebooted its extraction-based multiplayer spin-off, codenamed Project Maverick.

Originally conceived as a multiplayer component for Far Cry 7, the project evolved into a standalone game in early 2023. However, following internal evaluations and a company-wide restructuring, Ubisoft has now decided to take Maverick back to the early development stage.

Project Background and Challenges

According to Insider Gaming, Maverick was designed as an extraction-style shooter set in Alaska, where players would have to survive harsh conditions, battle AI-controlled soldiers, and fend off dangerous wildlife—all while competing against other players.

The game was Ubisoft’s attempt to enter the growing extraction shooter genre, which includes titles like Escape from Tarkov and Hunt: Showdown. However, multiple recent setbacks—flops like Star Wars Outlaws, XDefiant, and Last Crown, share price drop to all-time low, management crisis—have led to the project’s reboot.

Reports suggest that its development team has now been reassigned entirely to Far Cry 7, leaving the spin-off without key resources.

As a result, Maverick has been sent back to the prototyping stage, with Ubisoft Montreal and Ubisoft Sherbrooke leading efforts to reimagine its concept.

What's Next for Far Cry and Maverick

Ubisoft has yet to confirm a release date for Far Cry 7, but sources suggest a 2026 launch is the current target. However, some believe this timeline may be overly optimistic due to the game's increasing budget and complexity.

Despite these challenges, early playtesting feedback has been largely positive, with noticeable improvements in gameplay and movement mechanics compared to previous entries in the series.

As for Maverick, its future remains uncertain. Ubisoft may be waiting to see how upcoming extraction shooters like Arc Raiders, Marathon, and Exoborne perform before fully committing to the project.
