Nearly a decade after the tragic murder of 20-year-old Calvin Riley, the FBI has released new information in hopes of finally cracking the case.
On the night of August 6, 2016, Riley—a standout pitcher at San Joaquin Delta College and Junipero Serra High School graduate—was playing Pokémon Go with a friend near Ghirardelli Square. At around 9:50 PM, he was shot from behind in what investigators described as a sudden, unprovoked attack. Tellingly, his phone and wallet were left untouched, suggesting the motive wasn’t robbery but possibly premeditated.
A witness at the scene—Riley’s friend visiting from Boston—recalled seeing a man fleeing into a vehicle immediately after the shooting. Responding officers from the San Francisco Police Department and U.S. Park Police found no signs of a confrontation, reinforcing the theory that the shooting was a targeted act.
Early Investigation and Suspect Details
In the early days of the investigation, authorities developed a composite sketch of a man linked to the scene. He was seen with a brunette woman, and the pair were believed to be connected to two suspicious vehicles: a white Hyundai Sonata (around the 2013 model year) and a dark-colored Audi A3 wagon (model years 2006–2009). Both cars were seen entering and leaving the area together, possibly indicating a coordinated effort.
By 2017, the Riley family, alongside the U.S. Park Police, raised the reward for information to $110,000. Despite the public efforts and media attention, no arrests were made, and frustration grew. Calvin’s father, Sean Riley, repeatedly called for greater urgency from authorities, arguing that the case had not received the priority it deserved.
FBI Takes Over, Adds New Evidence
After years of limited progress, the FBI officially assumed control of the case in 2023. Since then, federal investigators have taken a fresh look at the available evidence. Now, on June 24, 2025, they released a second sketch featuring another person of interest: a bald man with glasses and a long beard. According to the FBI, this individual was seen recording video footage near the crime scene at the time of the shooting.

The new developments have also revived interest in identifying a second person—described as a blonde woman—though no sketch has been released of her yet. Authorities continue to seek the public’s help in identifying her and the two vehicles.
A new $25,000 reward has now been offered for any information that could lead to the identification and arrest of those involved.
The Riley family has remained active in their pursuit of justice, hosting annual vigils and creating the “Justice for Calvin Riley” memorial page to keep the case in public view.
The FBI is urging anyone who may have been in the area that night or who recognizes any of the released sketches to come forward. Every lead, no matter how minor it might seem, could be the breakthrough needed to solve this long-standing mystery.
