The Final Fantasy series has officially surpassed 203 million units sold worldwide.

The news came tucked into a recent Square Enix press release focused on a new update for Final Fantasy XIV Online: Dawntrail's Patch 7.3, but it was the sales update that really stood out.

The company stated that the Final Fantasy franchise has now crossed the 203 million mark globally — a solid jump from 195 million in October 2024, which itself was already an impressive leap from the 180 million milestone in mid-2023.

So, what does this mean in practical terms? Well, the franchise seems to be averaging around 10 million units sold per year, even without dropping a new mainline title every few months. The last big release, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, came out in February 2024 on PlayStation and later landed on Windows. Despite that, the series continues to perform strongly thanks to remakes, spin-offs, and the ongoing success of FFXIV.

One smaller but notable contributor to this surge is the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster collection. According to Square Enix, this classic bundle has now sold 5 million units worldwide, more than doubling the 2 million units it had shifted as of September 2023.

While Final Fantasy continues to break records of its own, it still trails behind gaming giants like Grand Theft Auto V, which alone has sold over 215 million units, while the GTA series as a whole stands around 450 million.

And when you look at overall franchise rankings, Final Fantasy currently sits among the top 10 best-selling franchises of all time, according to estimates from the Video Game Sales Wiki.

The Final Fantasy legacy began in 1987 on the Famicom and has since evolved across generations, genres, and platforms.

With the franchise nearing its 40th anniversary in 2027, fans can expect more to come — including potential remakes, spin-offs, and possibly new projects for the Switch 2, which is to be a platform Square Enix is keeping a close eye on.
