The long-rumored Final Fantasy IX Remake might be facing some serious setbacks, with new leaks suggesting the game is currently in trouble — and possibly even cancelled.

The update comes from well-known leaker NateTheHate, who recently responded to a fan on ResetEra asking for the latest scoop on the remake. He mentioned that, last he checked, the game was still in development. However, he also admitted that a recent tip from one of his sources mentioned the remake was "in trouble" and “possibly cancelled.” He stressed that the cancellation claim came from only a single source and still needs further verification.

These rumors come at a particularly emotional time for fans, as Final Fantasy IX just celebrated its 25th anniversary. The company had launched a dedicated anniversary website, released some new merchandise, and even posted a nostalgic quote from the game’s ending on social media. Naturally, all signs seemed to point toward a remake reveal — especially with how well the Final Fantasy VII Remake series has been doing.

But when July 7 rolled around, Square Enix didn’t drop a remake announcement. Instead, fans got a nice (but admittedly underwhelming) montage video showcasing scenes from the original game. While the tribute was appreciated, it wasn’t exactly the big celebration many were hoping for — especially after weeks of buildup and hints.

Now, let’s be real — rumors are just that: rumors. But NateTheHate isn’t exactly a random name in the rumor mill. He’s been right before, notably predicting the arrival of Final Fantasy VII Remake and Final Fantasy XIV on Xbox platforms. Those predictions turned out to be spot-on, which makes this recent claim a bit more concerning for fans.

Nevertheless, the original Final Fantasy IX is still considered one of the most heartfelt and charming entries in the franchise. With its lovable cast, classic turn-based combat, and rich world, it remains a fan favorite — and many were excited to see how Square Enix would modernize it.

Speaking of gameplay, a lot of fans are hoping that, if the remake does happen, it keeps the turn-based battle system instead of switching to the action-heavy style used in more recent titles. With games like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 proving that turn-based JRPGs can still be commercially successful, there’s a growing hope that Square might embrace that style again.

For now, all eyes are on Square Enix for clarification. While the rumors have certainly shaken hopes, nothing has been officially confirmed or denied.
