Forza Horizon 5 became the top-selling game on PlayStation for May 2025, with 1.3 million copies sold during the month.
That's according to Alinea Analytics, a market research firm, which stated that total PlayStation 5 sales of the game now reached 2.2 million units, generating more than $100 million in revenue.
Originally launched as an Xbox exclusive, Forza Horizon 5’s success on a rival platform reflects the growing popularity of Xbox-published games on PlayStation.
Forza not only sold well but also managed to surpass the highly anticipated Assassin’s Creed Shadows, which has now stalled at around 1.8 million sales on PS5.
One key reason behind Forza’s boost was a strategic price cut to $48 near the end of May. This pricing strategy helped the game add another 100,000 units sold in the final two days of the month alone.
Another major release, Elden Ring: Nightreign, debuted in the second spot with 752,000 copies sold in just two days. According to Alinea, 85% of those who bought Nightreign already owned the original Elden Ring, suggesting that the new title’s success is closely tied to the established fanbase. The United States and Japan were the biggest markets, making up 38% and 13% of the game’s PlayStation sales, respectively.
Meanwhile, EA Sports FC 25 added 729,000 units in May, bringing its PlayStation total to 18 million.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, a recent RPG hit, continued to show strong momentum, selling 614,000 copies in May and surpassing one million total PlayStation sales.
Minecraft, still going strong years after release, sold 491,000 copies in May, thanks in part to renewed interest generated by the recent Minecraft movie. The game’s total lifetime sales have now reached over 350 million across all platforms.
Grand Theft Auto V continues to hold its own, selling 437,000 copies in May. After being removed from PlayStation Plus in late April, the title saw a noticeable bump in sales, increasing by 100,000 copies compared to April.
DOOM: The Dark Ages entered the chart with 270,000 sales on PS5. While the numbers may seem modest, the game has been downloaded by over 3 million players overall, mostly through Xbox Game Pass.
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered rounded out the top 10 with 190,000 copies sold. It was shadow-dropped by Xbox during the release window of Expedition 33 and initially outsold it in April. However, in May, Expedition 33 reclaimed its momentum.
Other notable titles include NBA 2K25 and The Last of Us Part II, which sold just under 200,000 copies each. The Last of Us Part II likely benefited from both the release of the Complete Edition and ongoing interest from HBO’s TV series adaptation.
In total, Xbox-published titles made up 44% of all sales in the PlayStation top 10 for May.
