Game Servers Shutting Down in May, June, & Beyond in 2025

Several well-known online titles are set to shut down their servers in 2025, leaving fans with limited time to enjoy them before they become unplayable.

Dauntless Shuts Down After Declining Player Base

The first major closure is Dauntless, the free-to-play action RPG developed by Phoenix Labs, which once boasted over 15 million players. Its servers will go offline permanently on May 29, 2025, across PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

The shutdown announcement cited a "negative public reception of TK" and a "decline of active players." On Reddit, disappointed fans expressed frustration, blaming mismanagement and ownership changes. One user lamented, “The game is nothing like I remember it when it first launched.”

MultiVersus Ends Service One Year After Full Launch

Another high-profile closure is MultiVersus, the Warner Bros. crossover brawler. The game will shut down on May 30, 2025, at 9 AM PST, following the conclusion of Season 5, which introduced Aquaman and Lola Bunny.

Although offline modes will remain accessible, online play and updates will cease. Real-money transactions were already disabled ahead of the closure. Warner Bros. Games said the decision came after "careful consideration," though reports indicate that the title's underperformance contributed to a $100 million writedown for the company.

XDefiant and Resident Evil Re:Verse Join June Shutdowns

In June 2025, several more titles will go offline:

  • XDefiant, Ubisoft's free-to-play shooter, will shut down on June 3. The game failed to retain players and has already been delisted from the store. All 13 achievements will become unobtainable after shutdown.

  • Resident Evil Re:Verse, bundled with Resident Evil Village, will end online support on June 29. Capcom stated the game had fulfilled its "celebratory purpose." All achievements will be discontinued, but players can complete them in around four hours with proper coordination.

  • Madden NFL 21 (Xbox One and Series X|S versions) will lose online functionality on June 30. With 2,000 Gamerscore spread across both versions, players are encouraged to start now—each version takes roughly 10 hours to complete with guides.

Additional Closures Scheduled Through 2025

Beyond May and June, more titles are expected to shut down throughout the year:

  • The First Descendant – PS4 and Xbox One versions only (June 19)

  • Black Desert – (June 26)

  • Arizona Sunshine – (July 1)

  • Skyworld – (July 1)

  • Danmachi Battle Chronicle – (September 29)

  • WWE 2K24 – (September 30)

  • Madden NFL 22 – (October 20)

  • PGA Tour 2K21 – (October 30)

  • NBA 2K24 – (December 31)

Why Are Online Games Shutting Down?

The server shutdowns are a natural part of the game lifecycle, especially when active player numbers decline. Once a game's operational costs exceed its revenue potential, companies often opt to discontinue support—regardless of initial success.

The competitive nature of the online gaming market makes longevity a challenge. Even promising launches like XDefiant can falter without strong player retention strategies and consistent content updates.

Final Thoughts

For fans of these games, the clock is ticking. Whether you're aiming to complete achievements or just want one last session, now is the time to jump back in. Developers may be closing the doors on these worlds, but their communities will remember them long after the servers go dark.
