Garena and Kadokawa have officially pulled back the curtain on the Garena Free Fire anime adaptation.
The reveal comes with a teaser trailer and key visual, both centered around Kelly, one of Free Fire’s most iconic characters. Known for her speed and quick decision-making in the game, she now takes on a leading role in the anime’s story.
The short trailer follows Kelly and her allies as they stumble upon a hidden conspiracy, suggesting the series will explore deeper storylines beyond the usual battle royale chaos.
The project is being led by Ken Takahashi, a director best known for his work on Ragna Crimson and Fate/Kaleid Liner Prisma Illya.
Animation duties are being handled by CANDY BOX, the studio behind Blue Archive The Animation and Azur Lane Bisoku: Zenshin!.
These names might not be blockbuster-level for casual anime fans, but they’ve got a solid track record with game-based series — so expectations are definitely up.
Music is also a big part of the production, with Sus4 Inc on board to compose the soundtrack. They’ve previously worked on Ragna Crimson and a song featuring Jackie Chan (yes, that Jackie Chan). The trailer features a reimagined version of a signature Free Fire melody that long-time players will instantly recognize.
The anime is being produced by a Japanese animation studio, with KADOKAWA QINGYU — Kadokawa’s overseas production branch — managing the project. The plan is to stream and broadcast the anime globally, although a release date hasn't been confirmed yet.
For those unfamiliar, Garena Free Fire isn’t just another mobile game. It’s been the most downloaded mobile battle royale title for six years straight, according to Sensor Tower. It also claimed the top spot as the world’s most downloaded mobile game in 2019, 2021, 2023, and 2024 — not a small feat in the crowded mobile gaming market.
Garena, the developer and publisher behind Free Fire, is known for delivering highly engaging online multiplayer experiences. Besides its original titles, the company also handles the licensing and publishing of global hits like Call of Duty: Mobile and Arena of Valor in selected regions.
As for Kadokawa, it’s a heavy hitter in Japan’s entertainment world. The company’s behind major anime franchises like Sword Art Online, Re:Zero, and Overlord. It also owns nearly 70% of FromSoftware, the studio responsible for Dark Souls and Elden Ring. And if that wasn’t enough, Sony recently became Kadokawa’s largest shareholder after investing around $318 million USD in December 2024.
