GLAAD Launches Queer Emerging Developers Program to Support LGBTQ+ Game Creators

GLAAD has announced a new initiative called the Queer Emerging Developers (QED) Program, designed to support early and mid-career LGBTQ+ game developers with mentorship, visibility, and industry opportunities.

According to GLAAD, the program is part of its broader mission to demonstrate how "authentic representation in media can spark positive cultural change for LGBTQ+ people."

Developers accepted into the program will receive mentorship from industry professionals, training from the GLAAD Media Institute, and guidance from team members who have previously worked on inclusive titles such as The Sims 4, Apex Legends, and Tell Me Why.

Over four months, participants will work closely with mentors to sharpen their craft. The initiative also emphasizes visibility, with selected developers featured on GLAAD’s website.

Why is this initiative important?

As per GLAAD’s 2024 Gaming Report, 17% of gamers in the U.S. identify as LGBTQ+. Yet, opportunities for LGBTQ+ creators to share their perspectives remain limited.

GLAAD sees the QED Program as a way to address this gap directly by investing in queer developers and ensuring their stories have space in an industry often dominated by more conventional narratives.

What opportunities will participants receive?

One of the standout aspects of the program is that the first cohort will attend the 2026 Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco. Cohort members will be provided with an All-Access pass, a limited travel stipend, and the chance to network with global industry leaders.

The mentorship period will run during the first half of 2026, and participants are expected to commit to virtual program activities leading up to GDC.

Who can apply and how?

Applications for the inaugural cohort are open now and will close on November 10, 2025. The program is open to early-to-mid career LGBTQ+ game developers worldwide. Interested applicants can review eligibility details and apply directly through GLAAD’s official website.
