God of War Rumors Hint at Egyptian Weapon for Kratos

The next mainline God of War game could introduce an Egyptian setting and a new weapon for Kratos, according to recent reports from industry insiders.

A New Weapon for Kratos

Throughout the series, Kratos has wielded some of gaming’s most iconic weapons. The Greek-era entries gave us the fiery Blades of Chaos, while the Norse duology introduced the frost-powered Leviathan Axe. Now, according to Tom Henderson (via Push Square), the next chapter may see Kratos wielding an “Egyptian sword.”

Speaking on a podcast, Henderson compared the new weapon to the one used by the Prince in Prince of Persia. While he didn’t go into specifics, this could point to a curved blade resembling a scimitar or even a khopesh (as shown in the image), both of which are deeply rooted in Egyptian history.

Teases of an Egyptian Saga

Hints toward Egypt have surfaced before. The Norse games included subtle nods to other mythologies, with Egypt among them.

Earlier this year, entertainment insider Daniel Richtman reported that Sony was casting Middle Eastern actors for an undisclosed AAA project, which many believed to be tied to God of War.

Interestingly, Santa Monica Studio originally considered Egypt as the setting for the 2018 reboot before choosing Norse mythology instead. That background has kept speculation alive that the franchise might eventually return to that idea.

Earlier, Henderson himself suggested that the upcoming project may not be a large-scale mainline game but instead a smaller 2.5D God of War experience. In early June, he described the project as “much smaller in scale” than initially expected.

Journalist Jeff Grubb backed up this claim, stating during the June 17 episode of The Last of the Nintendogs podcast that the 2.5D project has been delayed to 2026. Grubb later reiterated his agreement on social media, which adds weight to the report.

However, earlier claims by both insiders suggested a Norse setting rather than an Egyptian one, mentioning that a game would focus on a younger Kratos sticking to Norse roots. But new reports suggest otherwise, which could mean either two separate God of War projects are in development or one that blends both cultures. Whatever the case, we need to wait for the official announcement and take this information with a grain of salt, for now.
