Hasbro is getting ready to share its plans for the next Baldur's Gate game. The company recently hinted at upcoming announcements while speaking at the 2025 Game Developers Conference.
Dan Ayoub, senior vice president of digital games at Hasbro, told IGN that fans won't have to wait long to hear what's next for the popular fantasy role-playing game series. "In pretty short order, we're going to have some stuff to talk about around that," Ayoub said.
The news comes after developer Larian Studios confirmed it would not be making the next game in the series. Larian created Baldur's Gate 3, which launched fully in 2023 after several years in early access. The game went on to win numerous awards and sold over 10 million copies by early 2025.
This success creates a challenging situation for whoever takes on the next Baldur's Gate project. Ayoub acknowledged this pressure, saying, "It's somewhat of an unenviable position." However, he emphasized that Hasbro isn't rushing into anything. "We're not in a hurry. We're going to take a very measured approach."
According to Ayoub, the company has "a lot of people very interested in Baldur's Gate" and is exploring multiple options for the franchise's future. While he didn't specify whether the announcement would be about a full Baldur's Gate 4 or perhaps something smaller like a crossover project, he did mention that the company has "a lot of plans, a lot of different ways to go about it."
The success of Baldur's Gate 3 has raised expectations not just for future entries in the series but for other Dungeons & Dragons-related projects as well. Rather than being intimidated by this high bar, Ayoub sees it as motivation. "I'm never one to shy down from a challenge," he said. "Developers love to have a high bar to go after."
Hasbro recently posted a job opening for a senior narrative role in Dungeons & Dragons on March 8, which was described as "a unique IP development role." This timing suggests the company may be staffing up for whatever comes next in the Baldur's Gate universe.
For fans of Baldur's Gate 3, Larian Studios is still supporting the game, with Patch 8 planned as the final major update before the studio moves on to other projects. Many players are still enjoying multiple playthroughs of the massive RPG, which is now about a year and a half old.
