id Software, the studio behind the Doom franchise, is reportedly working on a brand-new first-person shooter (FPS).

The developer has recently posted a job opening for a senior role on the project, sparking speculation about what could follow after its most recent release, Doom: The Dark Ages, which launched on May 15, 2025.

The job listing is for a Lead Gameplay Features Programmer on an “unannounced video game project.” One key requirement listed is prior experience with first-person shooters, which strongly suggests the studio’s next title will stay true to its roots.

The job description reveals the project is being built with id Tech, the proprietary engine that has powered most of id Software’s games since the 1990s. The most recent version, id Tech 8, was officially introduced during the Xbox Developer Direct in January 2025. Given the studio’s reputation for pushing technical boundaries, there’s also a chance the team could experiment with a hybrid approach, similar to Quake Champions (2017), which ran on a blend of id Tech and Saber Interactive’s Saber3D engine.

That said, the listing alone doesn’t offer solid clues about the current stage of development. As per industry trends, studios sometimes hire senior staff early to establish foundations, but they also bring them in later as projects expand or when replacements are needed. What can be reasonably assumed is that the title is targeting multiple platforms, since the posting specifically calls for console development expertise alongside PC experience — a pattern consistent with id Software’s past releases.

For now, the details remain under wraps. But with hiring underway, it seems clear that id Software is quietly laying the groundwork for its next big FPS.
