Sony Pictures has pulled the upcoming live-action "Street Fighter" movie from its release calendar. It was originally set to hit theaters on March 20, 2026, but now there’s no confirmed date.
The movie is a collaboration between Sony, Legendary Entertainment, and Capcom, the company behind the legendary fighting game series.
The project is still in development, but details are pretty scarce. No word yet on the cast or plot, though reports say Kitao Sakurai, known for Netflix’s "Bad Trip," is on board to direct. Before him, Danny and Michael Philippou ("Talk to Me") were in talks to take the helm, but things shifted after Sony and Legendary ended their distribution deal last year.
This isn’t the first time "Street Fighter" has been adapted for the big screen. The 1994 version, starring Jean-Claude Van Damme as Guile and Raúl Juliá as M. Bison, has gained a cult following despite its mixed reception. In 2009, "Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li" gave it another shot, but that one didn’t exactly win over fans or critics either.
Sony’s decision to put "Street Fighter" on hold comes at a time when video game movies are making a serious comeback. Hits like "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" and the "Sonic the Hedgehog" series have shown that game-based films can rake in big bucks and win over audiences. With "Minecraft: The Movie" dropping next month, Hollywood is leaning harder into video game adaptations than ever.
For now, "Street Fighter" is stuck in limbo, and fans will have to be patient. Hopefully, more updates will roll out soon, and we’ll see if this adaptation can finally break the streak of underwhelming attempts.
My opinion is not to rush it and I think they should bring the Assassin's Fist creators to work action directing the fight and reprise their roles for the film.
