Cross-Play Teased, Release Date Still a Mystery
While no official launch date for the PC version (Steam) has been announced, cross-play between mobile and PC has been hinted at. If implemented, it could allow players to seamlessly switch platforms without losing their progression or roster—a major win for long-time fans.
A Decade of Superpowered Brawls
For those unfamiliar, Marvel Contest of Champions is a 2D fighting game that lets players build teams of Marvel heroes and villains to battle it out in classic arcade-style combat.
What started in 2014 with a modest cast of 26 characters has now ballooned into a roster of over 300, spanning the Marvel multiverse.
OGs like Captain America, Cyclops, and Wolverine have since been joined by newcomers like Spider-Woman and Lumatrix, who debuted in April 2025. Each character comes with a star rating ranging from one to seven, which affects their strength, abilities, and rarity.
Gacha Mechanics and Competitive Play
While the game is free-to-play, its gacha-style monetization remains intact. New characters often arrive first through early access bundles, giving paying players the first shot—but not a guaranteed one—at the latest additions. Over time, these characters are also made available to free players through in-game currency.
These characters can then be used in Battlegrounds, the game’s PvP mode, which remains a core draw for competitive players. The monetization model—anchored in limited-time bundles, character rotations, and ranked PvP—has kept Contest of Champions relevant and profitable, even after 10 years.
A Financial Juggernaut
The game earned $128.6 million in 2024 alone from the App Store and Google Play. Its peak year was 2018, when it brought in $264.5 million. Even in a crowded mobile market, Contest of Champions has remained a consistent top earner.
As it heads to PC, Kabam is betting that expanding the game’s reach—and potentially introducing cross-platform play—will reinvigorate the title and attract a new wave of players.
