A dating app specifically designed for Super Smash Bros fans has been stopped from launching. The app called "Smash Together," which described itself as "the premium dating app for Smashers," received a cease and desist notice just 24 hours before its planned beta release.
SmashTogether was first announced almost a year ago in June 2024. The app had been building momentum and was finally ready for its beta launch this week when legal issues halted its progress.
On May 14, 2025, the SmashTogether team posted on social media: "We got cease & desisted".
While the team didn't specifically name Nintendo as the source of the legal notice, it seems likely the gaming giant stepped in to protect its intellectual property. Nintendo had numerous potential concerns about an app connecting fans of its family-friendly fighting game featuring kid-friendly characters like Mario and Pikachu.
The app would have let users connect based on their shared passion for the game, potentially leading to both gaming sessions and romantic connections.
This isn't the first time Nintendo has protected its intellectual property aggressively. The company recently won a significant legal victory against piracy by shutting down a file-sharing site used for illegal game copies.
Nintendo's legal team has been particularly active lately, also pursuing action against the monster-collecting game Palworld for its alleged similarities to Pokémon.
The SmashTogether team has not provided additional updates since announcing the cease and desist notice. For now, Smash Bros fans looking for like-minded companions will need to find other ways to connect.
