Paramount Reportedly Eyeing Call of Duty Film Adaptation

Call of Duty

Paramount Pictures is exploring the possibility of bringing Call of Duty to the big screen, with reports suggesting the project has been marked as a "top priority" for the studio.

According to journalist Matthew Belloni in his What I’m Hearing newsletter on Puck, the idea surfaced following the recent merger between Skydance Media and Paramount Global. Belloni reports that Paramount’s new owner, David Ellison, along with studio executives Josh Greenstein and Dana Goldberg, is particularly interested in securing the rights.

Not Their First Shot

This isn’t the first time Call of Duty has been eyed for Hollywood. Back in 2015, Activision Blizzard Studios announced plans for a Call of Duty cinematic universe, with Stefano Sollima (Sicario: Day of the Soldado) once attached to direct. Early rumors even floated names like Tom Hardy and Chris Pine for lead roles. However, that ambitious project eventually stalled and was quietly shelved.

Why Now?

Paramount’s interest likely stems from its success with the Sonic the Hedgehog movies, which pulled in over $1 billion globally. That kind of box office magic makes game adaptations look pretty tempting.

But it’s not all smooth sailing. The studio’s Halo series started strong on Paramount+ in 2022, only to be cancelled after season two. So yeah, adapting games is tricky business.

Fans Aren’t Convinced

Online reactions? Pretty mixed. A lot of gamers feel like we’ve already got enough war movies, and slapping the Call of Duty name on another one doesn’t change much. Some are even comparing it to the Borderlands movie flop, warning that this could go the same way if it’s not handled with care.

Still, there’s a glimmer of hope. The Modern Warfare storyline already has cinematic vibes, and some fans think it could translate well to film. Others suggest going off-script and creating a fresh story within the Call of Duty universe — new characters, new stakes, but familiar branding.

What’s Next?

Nothing’s locked in yet, but if Paramount does seal the deal, the potential is huge. The franchise has everything from gritty realism to zombie chaos and conspiracy-driven Black Ops arcs. That kind of variety could fuel a whole series of films — if they get the tone and execution right.

So, will Call of Duty finally make its Hollywood debut? Too early to say. But with Paramount doubling down on gaming IPs, it’s definitely one to watch.
