Peak has rolled out its v1.20.a update, bringing a wave of fresh content and quality-of-life improvements that go beyond the usual bug fixes.
The headline addition is The Mesa, a brand-new biome offering a challenging desert-like environment and unique gameplay twists.
The Mesa replaces the Alpine map for the next seven days, after which both will rotate randomly. This scorching new region features sandy trails, rocky outcrops, and small patches of shade — plus a few secrets for players willing to explore off the beaten path. According to the developers, Aggro Crab and Landfall, some of these hidden details tie into special rewards, keeping the spirit of discovery alive.
The update also adds 10 new badges, unlocking cosmetic rewards for those who complete specific challenges. Alongside these, players can equip fresh gear tailored for the harsh climate, including Balloons, Scout Cannon, Parasol, Sunscreen, Aloe Vera, and Dynamite.
There’s even a hinted “hidden surprise” tucked away in The Kiln, with a tornado making a cameo in the update trailer.
In terms of accessibility, the new “Bug Phobia Mode” helps players avoid encounters with arachnids and other insects. Controller navigation has also been expanded to the settings menu, making the game more user-friendly for console-style play.
Balance tweaks include slower fog rise in the Tropics, faster heat decay (with a delayed start), and increased heat damage from Caldera’s hot rocks. As for bug fixes, issues like teleport exploits with broken rusty pitons, misplaced biome-specific loot, and lingering effects from the Bugle of Friendship have all been addressed.
For those seeking an extra challenge, a limited-time Discord Play Quest runs from August 11–17 at 10 AM PDT, rewarding a Bing Bong Avatar upon completion.
While the team hasn’t committed to a specific roadmap for future updates, they’ve stated they’ll focus on stability patches for now. Given Peak’s success, selling over 5 million copies in its first month, it’s clear that players will have plenty to keep them climbing for the foreseeable future.
