Rumors suggest that Rocket League could be fully integrated into Fortnite in the near future.
The speculation comes from well-known Fortnite leaker @blortzen, who admitted the claim “sounds weird and fake,” yet chose to share it after noticing multiple hints lining up.
According to his explanation, the information reportedly comes from a playtester with a history of accurate Fortnite leaks. This same source previously revealed details about several seasons in advance, including early mentions of a Rocket Racing overhaul.
Adding fuel to the theory, files datamined in December 2024 showed a mysterious new mode codenamed “RL” listed alongside Rocket Racing (internally labeled “RR”). These files also included the Octane car cosmetics from Rocket League.
Later updates revealed strings referring to “Dealership Hats,” accessories directly tied to Rocket League, and another leaker named Loolo hinted at an upcoming “Dealership” feature in Fortnite.
Why Fans Are Skeptical
Despite the hints, many players are unconvinced that Rocket League would work as a direct port inside Fortnite. Even Blortzen himself doubts the feasibility, stressing that an entire game being folded into another sounds far-fetched.
Community reactions on X and Reddit have been mostly negative. The primary concern is that Rocket League loses its identity and independence if Epic treats it like just another Fortnite mode.
One even predicted it would kill Rocket League quickly. "Go ahead, Rocket League. See how fast the game dies."
Some fear that performance issues, file sizes, and gameplay differences could ruin what makes Rocket League unique.
One sarcastic comment read: “They want the game to be 100 GB, huh?” However, insider HYPEX later clarified that Epic might use a “Thin Client” update, which would make Fortnite’s base download much smaller (around 2–5GB) while letting players install game modes separately.
Professional Rocket League player Alpha Kep offered a more balanced view, saying: “I am not even mad, the way RL has been going it’s probs for the best. Maybe there is some potential, and we can do new things with this game. Just hope the physics and esports stay similar.”
Frustrations with Epic’s Management
Much of the backlash ties into a broader frustration with Epic’s management of Rocket League since acquiring developer Psyonix in 2019. Critics argue that the company has slowly pushed Rocket League into the background while prioritizing Fortnite as its central platform.
Moves like shifting the game to Unreal Engine 5, launching Rocket Racing inside Fortnite, and making lockers and cosmetics cross-compatible have added to the suspicion.
Comparisons to Guitar Hero and Fall Guys
The rumor also invites comparisons to how Epic handled other acquisitions. For instance, Epic purchased Harmonix (the studio behind Guitar Hero and Rock Band) in 2021. By 2023, Fortnite launched Fortnite Festival, a permanent rhythm-game mode that effectively absorbed the Guitar Hero formula — complete with licensed tracks, concerts, and multiplayer bands.
Similarly, after buying Mediatonic, the creators of Fall Guys, Epic slowly introduced Fall Guys-inspired maps, cosmetics, and challenges directly into Fortnite. While the standalone Fall Guys still exists, fans argue it has taken a backseat as Fortnite integration received more attention.
This track record is why many Rocket League fans fear history might repeat itself. They worry about losing the standalone Rocket League experience if Epic focuses more on Fortnite’s growing identity as a “metaverse hub” rather than keeping its acquisitions independent.
What’s Next?
For now, nothing has been confirmed, and even the original leaker doubts the rumor’s likelihood. Still, the growing hints — from datamined “RL” modes to Rocket League cosmetics popping up in Fortnite — suggest Epic may have bigger plans in store. Whether that means a full Rocket League port, an expanded crossover mode, or just more Rocket Racing content remains to be seen.
What’s certain is that the Rocket League community is deeply protective of its game’s identity. If Epic does decide to fold it into Fortnite, the company will need to carefully balance innovation with preservation to avoid alienating the fanbase.
