A fresh rumor suggests that Prototype 3 could be in the works, more than a decade after the release of Prototype 2. The information comes from a Reddit user who claims to have taken part in an Activision study group focused on an upcoming Call of Duty title.
While sharing the details about Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, Reddit user Bigbyy also revealed that he saw a Prototype game in development. In the leaker’s own words:
“I also saw that another Prototype is planned with Alex Mercer returning as the protagonist. Gameplay will involve shapeshifting, transforming into other people to infiltrate areas, and the game will be set in New York.”
The original Prototype, released in 2009, was a critical and commercial success. It featured Alex Mercer, a powerful shapeshifter battling military forces and grotesque mutants while uncovering the mystery of his past. Prototype 2, which launched in 2012, shifted focus to James Heller as the protagonist, making Mercer the villain. While it didn’t quite match the popularity of its predecessor, it still has a loyal fanbase.
As exciting as this sounds, fans should approach the rumor with cautious optimism. There’s been no official confirmation from Activision regarding the revival of the Prototype franchise. That said, now that Activision is part of Microsoft’s Xbox portfolio, older IPs like Prototype may have a better shot at being resurrected under the new management.
A key question remains: Is there enough demand for Prototype 3? While Prototype 2 debuted with solid sales, it didn’t sustain momentum, which led to the series going dormant. The gaming landscape has changed significantly since then, and it’s uncertain whether a modern audience would respond to a new entry.
For those eager to revisit the experience, both Prototype games are available on modern consoles through PlayStation 4 and Xbox One ports.
The credibility of this leak could become clearer soon. The same leaker also shared early insights into Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, which is expected to be officially revealed in the near future. If those details prove accurate, it could lend more weight to the Prototype claim as well.
