Sony Interactive Entertainment is set to pay $7.8 million to eligible PlayStation Network users in the United States as part of a preliminary class-action settlement.

The Northern District of California granted preliminary approval for the settlement on April 8, 2026. The Saveri Law Firm officially announced the news through a press release on April 29.

The lawsuit at the center of this case is titled "Caccuri, et al. v. Sony Interactive Entertainment LLC," originally filed on May 7, 2021. Lead plaintiff Agustin Caccuri accused Sony of monopolizing the digital gaming market by restricting third-party digital game sales on its platform.

It is worth noting that this case is entirely separate from the ongoing "PlayStation You Owe Us" collective proceedings that were filed against Sony back in 2022.

According to the official press release, "The Court has preliminarily approved the proposed settlement between the Plaintiffs and Defendant (the 'Settlement'). The proposed Settlement will provide for the payment of $7,850,000 (the 'Settlement Amount') to resolve Plaintiffs' and Settlement Class Members' claims against Defendant."

The settlement covers all persons in the United States who purchased specific digital games through PSN between April 1, 2019, and December 31, 2023. However, there is an important detail to keep in mind. As per the court documents, the settlement appears to apply specifically to "game-specific vouchers" that were purchased through physical retailers such as Amazon, Best Buy, GameStop, Target, and Walmart. It likely does not cover games bought directly through online websites. So if you purchased a digital code at a physical store during that window, you may be in luck.

The road to this settlement was not a smooth one. The settlement was actually denied in July 2025. The reason was a failure to "provide an estimated recovery or a range of potential recovery for class members," even though Sony had already agreed to the terms at that point. Now that the preliminary approval has been granted, a "Fairness Hearing" has been scheduled for October 15, 2026. The settlement will only be fully finalized once the court determines that the proposed agreement is "fair, reasonable, and adequate to the Settlement Class."

The good news is that the reimbursement process appears to be automatic. As per the preliminary approval, credits will be distributed via "direct notification through the email addresses associated with Settlement Class members' PlayStation accounts." So you likely do not need to file a claim manually, though it is still wise to keep an eye on the PSN Digital Games Settlement website for any updates.
