After days of confusion and speculation, Sony has finally addressed the 30-day DRM timer situation that sent PlayStation players into a frenzy last week. And the clarification is far less alarming than many feared.

In an official statement given to GameSpot, a Sony Interactive Entertainment spokesperson confirmed:

"Players can continue to access and play their purchased games as usual. A one-time online check is required to confirm the game's license, after which no further check-ins are required."

That clears up a lot. What initially looked like a recurring 30-day check-in requirement turns out to be a single verification step tied to a new purchase. Once that check is done, players can go offline for as long as they want without worrying about being locked out of their games.

The controversy kicked off when modder Lance McDonald flagged the change on X, sharing a screenshot of Don't Starve displaying a new "Remaining Time" category. Game preservation account Does it Play also reported that all digital purchases made from around March 2026 onwards appeared to carry a visible 30-day timer on PS4, with PS5 tracking the same data silently in the background. Players understandably read this as a sign that Sony was enforcing ongoing DRM check-ins, similar to what Microsoft infamously attempted with the Xbox One back in 2013.

According to a statement Does it Play gave to Kotaku, the license checks appear to have been introduced to combat refund scams, specifically to prevent players from requesting a refund and then continuing to play a game by taking their console offline. That explanation lines up with Sony's official clarification.

For the vast majority of players, this was never going to be a practical issue. Most people are already connected online when they buy and download a digital game, meaning the one-time check would happen automatically without any extra effort.
