Square Enix has officially confirmed that Final Fantasy Brave Exvius and Dragon Quest of the Stars will be shutting down in Japan later this year.
Both mobile RPGs were first released in 2015 and were approaching their 10-year anniversaries in October. Despite their long run, the company has decided to sunset the games on October 31 at noon (Japan Standard Time).
In the statements, Square Enix expressed deep gratitude to fans, saying it “sincerely thanked” everyone who has supported and played the games over the years. At the same time, the company acknowledged the suddenness of the news and offered an apology to loyal players who have stuck with the titles since their launch.
For Dragon Quest of the Stars, the publisher explained the reasoning behind the closure: “Since launching on Thursday, October 15, 2015, we have worked hard every day to provide better service, but we have come to the conclusion that it will be difficult to provide a service that satisfies our customers going forward, and have therefore decided to terminate service.” A similar message was shared for Final Fantasy Brave Exvius.
As part of the transition, in-app purchases for both games have already been suspended, ensuring players won’t spend money on content that will soon be inaccessible.
The decision comes at a time when Square Enix is facing financial challenges. According to the company’s latest financial report for the quarter ending June 30, 2025, net sales and profits declined compared to the previous year. Its Digital Entertainment division, which covers the video game business, saw a 25% drop in revenue as new titles failed to reach expected sales levels.
