Square Enix and Tokyo Broadcasting System Television (TBS) have announced an unexpected partnership to co-develop a completely new video game IP.

This marks a rare collaboration between one of Japan's most renowned game publishers and a major national broadcaster.

Square Enix, best known for blockbuster series like Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts, will work alongside TBS, the company behind popular television programs such as Takeshi's Castle and Ninja Warrior.

The project, according to an official financial report, will not be based on any existing franchises from either company—it’s being developed as an entirely original game.

TBS Expands with EDGE and TBS Games

The move aligns with TBS’s broader strategy to expand its digital presence globally. Under its EDGE (Expand Digital Global Experience) initiative, TBS established a new game division called TBS Games in July 2023.

While still early in its lifecycle, the studio released its first title, I Am Adventure Boy: Ultimate Escape Island, exclusively in Japan on Nintendo Switch.

What Kind of Game Is It?

So far, neither Square Enix nor TBS has revealed much about the nature of the game. It’s unclear whether the new title will lean toward Square Enix’s signature RPG style, feature television-style storytelling, or chart a completely new direction altogether.

There’s also no word yet on a release window or which platforms the game will target.

What has been confirmed is that the project is being developed as a completely new, original IP with global appeal. The collaboration aims to combine TBS’s entertainment expertise with Square Enix’s deep game development experience to create something truly unique for both Japanese and international audiences.

With both companies keeping details tightly under wraps, fans will have to wait to see what form this intriguing partnership will take—but it’s one worth watching.
