On Sunday, June 22, Star Wars Battlefront 2 reached a new all-time peak on Steam with 35,892 concurrent players, according to data from SteamDB. That’s the highest number the game has ever recorded on Valve’s platform, and it comes at a time when Battlefront 2 seems to be living a second life.
Originally launched in 2017, the game had its share of controversies, especially around its microtransactions system. But over the years, that reputation has shifted. Thanks to steady improvements from DICE and continued community support, Battlefront 2 has become a fan favorite, often praised for its large-scale multiplayer battles and immersive Star Wars atmosphere.
So what’s fueling this sudden comeback in 2025? It’s a combination of factors. The current EA Publisher sale has dropped the price of the Celebration Edition to just $3.99 on Steam until July 10. But beyond that, a wave of Star Wars-themed events has stirred up interest — including the theatrical re-release of Revenge of the Sith for its 20th anniversary, a packed Season 2 of Andor, and major Star Wars crossovers in Fortnite and Monopoly Go.
Interest in the game first began to climb again in early May, around Star Wars Day (May 4), coinciding with Andor's run. According to SteamCharts, daily player peaks jumped from just over 1,000 to 5,000 within days. A community-driven campaign, including a Resurgence Day on May 24, organized by modders Kyber and popular creators, pushed the player base even higher. The momentum eventually led to the game shattering its previous record of 10,345 concurrent players set in January 2021.
Fueling the conversation further are nods from within the Star Wars universe. Actors like Muhannad Ben Amor (Wilmon Paak in Andor) and Janina Gavankar (who played Iden Versio in Battlefront 2) have shown public support for the title, adding weight to the community's demand.
Most recently, Battlefront 2 gained attention from NBA star Kyrie Irving, who streamed the game and expressed his love for it. “I want them to make Battlefront 3 already, bro,” Irving said during the stream, echoing sentiments widely shared across social media.
Despite the groundswell, there’s no sign that EA is ready to greenlight Battlefront 3. The publisher is reportedly focused on other key franchises like Battlefield, Apex Legends, and The Sims. According to earlier reports, a pitch for Battlefront 3 was allegedly turned down due to high licensing costs from Disney, even though the two Battlefront titles sold a combined 33 million copies.
Former DICE developers have also noted that bringing the original team back together would be “challenging,” as many have moved on to different projects. Currently, DICE is said to be working on Battlefield 6, while Respawn Entertainment is developing a third Star Wars Jedi title. EA also has Star Wars: Zero Company, a turn-based tactics game set during the Clone Wars, slated for 2026.
Still, the community isn’t giving up. Hashtags like MakeBattlefront3 continue to trend on X, with fans organizing play sessions, creating content, and flooding forums in hopes of grabbing EA’s attention.
