Starfield PS5 Release: Launch Times, Pricing, DualSense Features, and New Update Explained

Starfield is officially launching on PlayStation 5 on April 7, 2026, bringing the full sci-fi RPG experience to Sony's console for the first time.

The game, developed by Bethesda Game Studios, originally came out in 2023 exclusively on Xbox and PC. Now, nearly three years later, PS5 players will finally get their hands on it.

And it is not just a straight port either. The PS5 version comes packed with every post-launch update, a major free content drop called Free Lanes, and a brand-new paid story expansion called Terran Armada. Safe to say, PlayStation fans are getting the most complete version of the game yet.

Editions and Pricing

If you are thinking about picking it up, here is a quick breakdown of what is available at launch:

  • Standard Edition: $49.99, which includes the base game and all free updates to date.

  • Premium Edition: $69.99, which includes the base game, the Terran Armada story DLC, the Shattered Space expansion, 1,000 Creation Credits, and the Constellation Skin Pack featuring weapons, a suit, helmet, and boost pack.

  • Premium Upgrade (digital only): approximately $24.99 for those who buy the Standard Edition and want to upgrade later.

Pre-orders are already live on the PlayStation Store and at retailers. Physical editions will also be available around launch day.

Starfield’s PlayStation 5 Exclusive Features

PS5 Pro Optimizations

According to Bethesda Game Studios, PS5 Pro owners will have access to two dedicated display modes at launch:

  • Pro Visual Mode: targets 4K resolution output at 30 frames per second to maximize visual fidelity.

  • Pro Performance Mode: targets 60 frames per second for a smoother, more responsive gameplay experience.

Both modes make use of Sony's PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) upscaler.

DualSense Features

All base PS5 consoles, including non-Pro models, will support the full suite of DualSense features, alongside SSD optimization and Trophy support.

Here is what to expect from the controller:

  • Adaptive Triggers: The L2 and R2 buttons provide physical resistance based on different weapon types, both on the ground and during ship combat.

  • Light Bar: The controller's light bar changes color to reflect the player character's health or the spaceship's status in real time. It pulses red when there is imminent danger and returns to white once health is recovered.

  • Touchpad: Quick presses and swipes allow players to switch POV, open the map, activate the hand scanner, and access key menus like Inventory, Missions, and Skills without breaking gameplay flow.

  • Controller Speaker: Audio logs and ship intercom communications play directly through the DualSense speaker, adding a nice layer of immersion to space travel and exploration.

It is currently unclear whether these DualSense features will carry over to the PC version of Starfield when using a controller.

Two New Updates Rolling Out At The Same Time

What's in the Free Lanes Update

The Free Lanes update is, as per Bethesda, the biggest free content update Starfield has ever received. It launches on the same day as the PS5 version, on April 7, 2026, across PC, Xbox, and PS5.

Here is what players can look forward to at no extra cost:

  • Cruise Mode and Open Galaxy Travel, which lets you fly freely between planets within a star system without relying entirely on fast travel or grav jumps.

  • Incursions and new dynamic combat encounters that take place during space travel and increase in frequency as you progress further into the game.

  • X-Tech Resource, a new system that allows weapons, gear, and ships to evolve and grow over time, adding a deeper layer of personalization.

  • New ship modules, upgrades, and a Ship Optimization Terminal for fine-tuning power distribution across weapons, shields, and engines.

  • Outpost and base improvements, including shared resource containers, an Asteroid Base Home, and new planetary points of interest.

  • A new Anchorpoint space station hub, additional side quests, vehicles, and improved inventory management.

The heart of this update is about making exploration feel organic. Rather than fast-traveling everywhere, players now have more reasons to actually fly through space and see what turns up along the way.

Terran Armada DLC

The Terran Armada story DLC is priced at $9.99 and adds a new narrative threat to the Settled Systems. The Terran Armada is made up of vanished United Colonies and Freestar Collective members from the Colony War who consider themselves Earth's "true" descendants. They bring a robotic army into the picture, and the DLC comes with a full story campaign built around confronting them.

Beyond the main story, the DLC includes repeatable Incursion missions of varying sizes, new gear and laser weapons, contemporary assault rifles, fresh spacesuits, robotic companions, including a character named Muria, and a robust loot system with legendary item rolls.

The content is built around Free Lanes mechanics, meaning Cruise Mode encounters tie into the Armada's presence in various systems.
