Take-Two and Remedy Locked in Logo Dispute Despite Ongoing Collaboration

Take-Two Interactive and Remedy Entertainment, two companies currently collaborating on high-profile projects, have found themselves in an unexpected legal dispute. The issue? Their logos.

Take-Two, parent company of Rockstar Games, has filed a trademark opposition in the United Kingdom against Remedy’s recently rebranded logo, arguing that its minimalist “R” design is too close to Rockstar’s iconic branding.

Remedy unveiled its new logo in April 2023, moving away from the bullet-inspired design that had been associated with the studio since the Max Payne era. The updated look was meant to reflect Remedy’s growth beyond a single franchise, especially as the studio expands its portfolio with Control, Alan Wake, and upcoming projects. However, Take-Two believes the new design risks confusing consumers, given Rockstar’s long-standing “R” logo.

At first glance, the dispute feels puzzling. After all, Remedy and Rockstar are actively working together on remakes of Max Payne and Max Payne 2, with Remedy leading development and Rockstar handling publishing.

Besides that, both studios continue to move forward with their in-house projects. Take-Two and Rockstar are preparing for the release of Grand Theft Auto 6, one of the most anticipated games of the decade. Remedy, on the other hand, recently launched Alan Wake 2 to critical acclaim and is expanding the Control universe.
