The Witcher 3 Crosses 60 Million Copies Sold, As CD Projekt Focuses on Ciri-Led Witcher 4

The Witcher 3

A decade after its release, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt continues to dominate headlines. CD Projekt RED has officially announced that the game has now sold over 60 million copies worldwide, placing it neck-and-neck with The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim in the race to become the best-selling RPG of all time.

The sales figure, revealed during CD Projekt's latest financial report, includes both the base game and the Game of the Year (GOTY) edition, but excludes separate expansion packs.

60 Million and Counting: A Historic Milestone for CD Projekt

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, launched in May 2015, is widely regarded as CD Projekt’s magnum opus. “It brought untold hours of adventures and emotions to millions of gamers the world over,” said Adam Badowski, joint CEO of CD Projekt. “Selling over 60 million copies secures its place among the best-selling video games in history and motivates us to carry on with intensive work on the next trilogy.”

This new milestone comes just two years after the game crossed the 50 million mark in 2023—showcasing its continued momentum even in 2025.

Spotlight on The Witcher 4: Ciri Takes Center Stage

The next chapter in the Witcher saga is already in full production. Codenamed "Polaris", The Witcher 4 is the beginning of a new trilogy and marks a major shift by making Ciri the main protagonist.

According to CD Projekt, 422 developers—the largest team in the company—are now working on The Witcher 4, up from 407 last year.

The game is being built using Unreal Engine 5, and while there’s still much we don’t know, early buzz suggests a more mature, narrative-driven experience centered around Ciri’s evolution.

Some backlash has surfaced online over the protagonist switch, but Doug Cockle, the voice of Geralt, dismissed the criticism:

“That’s just stupid. It’s not woke,” Cockle said. “Ciri is a cool character from The Witcher, and they’re gonna focus on that character, and that’s awesome.”

Executive producer Małgorzata Mitręga echoed the sentiment in an interview with IGN, calling Ciri “the very organic, logical choice” and reaffirming that the franchise’s narrative arc was always heading in this direction.

What Else Is CD Projekt RED Working On?

Alongside The Witcher 4, CD Projekt has several other major projects in development:

  • A Cyberpunk 2077 sequel is in pre-production.

  • A remake of the original Witcher (2007) is being developed by Fool’s Theory, a studio formed by former CD Projekt staff.

  • A new Witcher spinoff title is in development at CD Projekt RED’s Boston office.

Although no official release date has been announced, CD Projekt RED has hinted that The Witcher 4 likely won’t arrive before 2027. The studio is reportedly taking extra care to avoid the issues that plagued Cyberpunk 2077's rocky launch.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is accessible across multiple gaming platforms -- PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Windows PC through various digital stores including GOG, Epic Games Store, and Steam.
