Ubisoft is cooking up something different in the Rainbow Six universe — and it’s not another FPS. According to Insider Gaming reports, the studio is currently developing a new turn-based tactics game set in the world of Rainbow Six Siege, with a release window aiming for 2026 or 2027.
Siege Meets XCOM?
Insiders describe the unannounced project as a top-down, squad-based tactical game with strong XCOM vibes. One source even said, “Just watch some XCOM gameplay — it’s basically an updated version of that, with cinematic cutscenes and so on.”
The gameplay loop reportedly maintains similarities with Rainbow Six Siege, where players select different operators based on their unique skills to complete missions such as raiding buildings and rescuing hostages.
This tactical approach allows players to leverage each operator's specialized abilities to overcome various challenges. Think Ash blowing walls and Doc healing allies, but in a grid-based, slow-burn format. Tactical heads, this one’s for you.
A New Flavor for Rainbow Six
Ubisoft is targeting a 25–30 hour campaign, depending on skill and strategy, though that could shift if content gets trimmed before release.
The game is being built for current-gen platforms — Xbox Series X|S, PS5, and PC — and insiders say a Nintendo Switch 2 version is "possible."
The project is still unannounced, but internally, there's talk it might become part of Ubisoft’s new Tencent-backed subsidiary, which is focused on scaling blockbuster franchises like Rainbow Six, Far Cry, and Assassin’s Creed.
That move would align with Ubisoft’s push to diversify its biggest IPs beyond their usual genres.
A Strategic Pivot After Extraction
This new tactics game comes on the heels of Rainbow Six Extraction’s underwhelming performance. While Siege is still going strong — with over 50 million players and counting — Extraction quietly faded out of support after missing expectations.
Ubisoft seems ready to reimagine what Rainbow Six can be, and this new title looks like a bold step in that direction. Instead of doubling down on live-service shooters, they’re leaning into the turn-based strategy genre, aiming to appeal to both tactical shooter veterans and XCOM-style tacticians.
