UK Government Launches £30M Fund to Support Local Game Developers

The UK Government has unveiled a new £30 million ($40.5 million) "Games Growth Package" designed to boost the country's game development sector.

The funding will be delivered over the next three years and primarily targets emerging studios and startups looking to bring their projects to the global market.

A key part of the initiative is the expansion of the UK Games Fund, which has already played a role in nurturing early-stage studios. With this new boost, the fund will offer broader support for young developers to scale their ideas into commercially viable games.

Alongside this, the London Games Festival is set to receive additional backing.

To steer this growth, the government is also forming a UK Video Games Council made up of industry figures. This council will work directly with policymakers and the Creative Industries Council to build stronger ties between the sector and Whitehall.

Addressing skills shortages is another major focus. A new UK Games Skills Network will be introduced to assess and address long-standing gaps in the talent pipeline. By improving training and career pathways, the government hopes to create a stronger foundation for long-term industry success.

This effort is part of a broader £380 million Creative Industries investment package, as confirmed by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS). According to the DCMS, the funding is intended to generate jobs, encourage regional development, and stimulate private investment across various creative sectors—spanning film, TV, music, visual arts, and of course, video games.

Meanwhile, regional support is already taking shape. Earlier this month, the Welsh Government awarded over £850,000 ($1.15 million) in funding to six independent game studios in Wales under its Games Scale Up Fund, developed in collaboration with Creative Wales and the UK Games Fund.
