WB Games Montréal is working on a new AAA game based on the DC Comics universe—and this time, it’s confirmed to be a live-service title.
This detail came to light through a recently posted job listing for an Executive Producer on the studio’s official website. While earlier listings hinted at the project’s AAA scale and DC roots, the mention of live-service elements is a new—and somewhat controversial—development.
The listing clearly outlines that the candidate will oversee “post-launch content and live service strategy”, indicating that the game won’t stop evolving after launch.
Further, the job description highlights responsibilities that include managing the entire production cycle from concept to live operations. It also stresses the need for a “deep understanding of the full game development lifecycle, including live services”. For many fans, that line alone raised some red flags—especially given the poor reception of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, another live-service DC title that struggled to find its footing.
Suicide Squad, developed by Rocksteady, never quite hit the mark with players or critics. Its disappointing launch played a role in Warner Bros. reporting a 41% drop in gaming revenue last year. That decline also led to layoffs and restructuring across several studios, including WB Games Montréal itself, which saw 99 employees laid off in December.
Despite these setbacks, the studio appears to be doubling down on the live-service model. This move comes as part of a broader strategy shift within Warner Bros. Games, which is now prioritizing key franchises like DC, Mortal Kombat, and Harry Potter. DC boss James Gunn also confirmed earlier this year that he had been in talks with multiple studios, including Rocksteady and NetherRealm, to explore more DC games.
Whether WB Games Montréal’s next project will be able to redeem the live-service model in the eyes of DC fans remains to be seen. The studio previously released Gotham Knights, which wasn't live-service but still received mixed reviews and failed to deliver lasting impact.
No official title or release window has been announced for this upcoming game. However, with the recruitment of an Executive Producer now underway, development seems to be picking up momentum. The role emphasizes team leadership, collaboration with publishing and marketing branches, and a focus on long-term player engagement—hallmarks of modern live-service design.
