The upcoming God of War live-action series on Amazon has sparked heavy speculation about who could step into the role of Kratos, and now insider John Campea has added fuel to the fire with a list of names he’s heard in the mix.
According to Campea—who has built a reputation for reliable leaks in the past, including details on Spider-Man: No Way Home and Keanu Reeves’ role as Shadow—there are reportedly 10 contenders floating around. He does admit, however, that while some of the names are based on things "he’s heard" from industry contacts, others are simply his own personal preferences. So, while we shouldn’t take this list as confirmed, it does give us a sense of the kind of actors fans and producers alike might have in mind.
Here are the actors Campea mentioned:
Christopher Judge – The man behind Kratos’ voice and motion capture in the games. While he embodies the character vocally, Campea expressed some doubts about whether Judge’s screen acting translates to the same level.
Jason Momoa – With roles like Aquaman and Khal Drogo under his belt, Momoa certainly has the physique and presence, though Campea pointed out the risk of typecasting.
Dave Bautista – Fresh off a slimmed-down phase post-Guardians of the Galaxy, Bautista could bulk back up if needed. He also brings credibility from his recent dramatic roles.
Winston Duke – Known for his role as M’Baku in Black Panther, Duke has both the physicality and acting chops, though his age might be on the younger side for Kratos.
Joe Manganiello – Recognized for playing Deathstroke in the DCEU, Manganiello has the right mix of age, build, and passion for the property.
Paul Levesque (Triple H) – The WWE legend arguably resembles Kratos the most in raw appearance, but questions remain about his acting range.
Manu Bennett – Famous for his performances in Spartacus and Arrow, Bennett brings intensity, though his height might be seen as a limitation for the role.
Oliver Richters – Standing at 7’2”, the Dutch bodybuilder (who also appeared in Reacher) certainly has an intimidating frame.
Travis Fimmel – Beloved as Ragnar in Vikings, Fimmel’s screen presence is undeniable, though he would need to bulk up significantly for Kratos.
Henry Cavill – Campea’s personal dream pick. Cavill checks all the boxes in terms of looks, acting, and presence, but his packed schedule could keep him out of the running.
As per Campea, there are three main factors that will determine who ultimately gets the role: the actor needs to be in their late 40s or early 50s to reflect Kratos’ weathered character, must have a commanding physical presence, and should be capable of portraying emotion without relying too heavily on dialogue.
It’s worth mentioning that the God of War series is being developed by Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica) for Amazon, which Campa considers the "best news" for the series, calling him the "greatest showrunner of all time." Filming set to begin in March 2026 in Vancouver.
At the end of the day, whether we see a fan-favorite like Christopher Judge, a Hollywood star like Momoa or Cavill, or even a left-field pick like Richters, the casting of Kratos is going to be a major talking point for months to come.
