Amazon’s long-awaited live-action adaptation of God of War is finally moving forward, with filming set to begin in March 2026 in Vancouver.
This update comes via Nexus Point News, which previously reported accurate casting details for the upcoming Street Fighter film.
According to the same report, casting for God of War is currently underway. While no names have been confirmed yet, production is ramping up — so fans can expect casting announcements in the coming months.
The series is being helmed by Ronald D. Moore, best known for his work on For All Mankind, Outlander, and Battlestar Galactica.
Moore joined the project in late 2024 after the original showrunner, Rafe Judkins, exited. Judkins, along with executive producers Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus — the team behind The Expanse — had been developing the series for over two years and had already completed several scripts. However, in October 2024, Amazon and Sony Pictures Television decided to shift creative direction, leading to the departure of Judkins and his team. That’s when Moore stepped in.
Moore isn’t steering the ship alone. The writers’ room is stacked with familiar collaborators, including Matthew Graham (Electric Dreams and Spanish Princess), Stephanie Shannon (For All Mankind and Outlander), Narendra K. Shankar (The Expanse and For All Mankind), Joe Menosky (For All Mankind and Star Trek: Discovery), Marc D. Bernardin (The Continental and Star Trek: Picard), and Tania Lotia (The Witcher and The Mighty Nein). Many of them have worked with Moore in previous projects.
During a panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Moore shared insights into the development process. “We’re in the scripts phase. It’s going very well. We’ve got a good team,” he told IGN. He also admitted that adapting a video game was new territory for him, but praised the depth of God of War’s mythology. “The deeper I got into it, the more impressed I was with the breadth and the depth of the mythology that’s involved in this video game,” Moore said.
The series will adapt the 2018 reboot of God of War, which reimagined Kratos as a more grounded, emotionally complex character. Set in the realm of Norse mythology, the story follows Kratos and his son Atreus as they journey to fulfill his late wife’s final wish — to scatter her ashes from the highest peak in the Nine Realms. Along the way, they face gods, monsters, and their own inner demons. One of the central antagonists is Baldur, an Æsir god whose invulnerability and rage make him a formidable foe.
The show is being produced by Amazon MGM Studios, Sony Pictures Television, PlayStation Productions, and Santa Monica Studio, the developer behind the original game.
While casting details remain under wraps, the production timeline suggests we’ll start seeing trailers, teasers, and promotional material by late 2026. Until then, fans can only speculate who’ll step into Kratos’ boots — and whether the series will live up to the emotional weight and epic scale of the game.
