This edition builds on the momentum generated by esports' debut as a full medal sport at the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games, where 7 titles were featured, including Arena of Valor, Dota 2, Dream Three Kingdoms 2, FIFA Online 4, League of Legends, PUBG, and Street Fighter V: Champion Edition.
According to Esports Charts, that event drew considerable viewership, with League of Legends peaking at 146,000 concurrent viewers and Dota 2 reaching 78,000, and those numbers did not even account for Chinese audiences.
The Asian Electronic Sports Federation will oversee the esports segment of the Games.
The broader significance of this is hard to ignore, especially as the International Olympic Committee moves forward with its own plans for the inaugural Olympic Esports Games, signaling that competitive gaming's place in international sports is only growing stronger.
The 2026 Asian Games are scheduled to run from September 19 to October 4, featuring competitions across 41 sports, with esports standing alongside traditional athletic disciplines as a fully recognized component of the program.
