Production on Amazon’s highly anticipated Tomb Raider live‑action series will officially kick off on January 19, 2026, with Game of Thrones alum Sophie Turner confirmed to step into the iconic role of Lara Croft.

The project, based on the legendary video game franchise, has been in development at Prime Video since early 2023 and was greenlit in May 2024. Turner’s casting was first reported later that year, but this is the first time Amazon MGM Studios has formally confirmed her involvement.

As reported by Variety, the series is being spearheaded by Phoebe Waller‑Bridge (Fleabag, Killing Eve), who will serve as creator, writer, and executive producer.

She’ll be joined by Chad Hodge (Wayward Pines) as co‑showrunner and executive producer, while Jonathan van Tulleken (Shōgun, Top Boy) will direct and also executive produce.

Waller‑Bridge expressed her excitement over the casting, calling Turner “formidable” and praising the creative team’s shared passion for the character. “It’s not very often you get to make a show of this scale with a character you grew up loving,” she said. “Everyone on board is wildly passionate about Lara and are all as outrageous, brave, and hilarious as she is.”

Turner, who follows in the footsteps of Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander, acknowledged the weight of the role. “She’s such an iconic character, who means so much to so many – and I am giving everything I’ve got,” she said, adding that with Waller‑Bridge at the helm, “we (and Lara) are all in very safe hands.”

The series will be produced by Crystal Dynamics, Story Kitchen, and Amazon MGM Studios. The partnership between Crystal Dynamics and Amazon also includes a first‑look deal to develop more Tomb Raider stories for both film and television.
