Gearbox Software CEO Randy Pitchford has expressed confidence that Borderlands 4 will push the franchise past 100 million lifetime sales once it launches later this year.
Speaking during Gamescom 2025, Pitchford told Insider Gaming that reaching the milestone will be “easy,” thanks to the popularity of the upcoming installment and the series’ strong fanbase. He further teased that Gearbox has “extremely exciting plans” for post-launch support, suggesting that fans can expect more than just the main game experience.
Pitchford reflected on the studio’s journey, recalling how the first Borderlands had a rough start when it debuted at Gamescom years ago. “I was trying to scream from the tallest mountain to get anyone to pay attention to it and nobody cared,” he said. According to him, many in the industry initially doubted the franchise would even survive. Yet, the series has since sold over 92 million copies worldwide, putting it on track to cross the 100 million mark with its next release.
Borderlands 4 is set to release worldwide on September 12, 2025, across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Steam. With its promise of a seamless open world, expanded gameplay choices, and robust post-launch roadmap, Gearbox is positioning the title as the most ambitious entry yet.
