Bungie has reportedly dropped its trademark application for “Traxus,” a name tied to its upcoming game, Marathon, following a legal dispute with RC car company Traxxas.
The situation began in May 2023, when Bungie filed to trademark “Traxus,” a fictional corporation featured across several of its sci-fi games, including Halo and the original Marathon series. While the name has been familiar to longtime fans, trouble emerged when Bungie tried to make it official—particularly because it overlaps phonetically with “Traxxas,” a well-established RC car brand.
In October 2024, Traxxas filed a formal opposition with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), arguing that “Traxus” could cause brand confusion. This concern was especially pointed since both trademarks covered overlapping categories, including clothing.
According to documents cited by The Game Post, the matter led to multiple deadline extensions between November 2024 and June 2025 as both companies attempted to resolve the issue through settlement discussions.
Eventually, on July 14, 2025, Bungie formally abandoned the “Traxus” trademark application. The filing was signed by both legal teams and confirmed that the opposition was dropped “without prejudice,” meaning the case is closed but could potentially be revisited.
Meanwhile, Marathon, Bungie’s upcoming extraction shooter, has been delayed indefinitely after promotional art controversy. No new release window has been announced yet.
