CD Projekt Red's upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 sequel will stick with the first-person perspective that helped make the original game a success.
The sequel, known internally as Project Orion, was first announced in October 2022. While official details remain scarce, a new job posting has given fans a peek behind the curtain at what's coming next.
The Boston office of CD Projekt Red, which is handling the sequel's development, recently posted a job opening for a senior gameplay animator. The February 20 listing specifically mentions that creating "immersive first-person experiences" will be a key part of the role, confirming the game will maintain the same viewpoint as the original.
When Cyberpunk 2077 was first revealed as a first-person game at E3 2018, some fans weren't sure about the choice. Many had expected a third-person game similar to the studio's Witcher series. However, time proved CD Projekt Red right.
The decision to stick with first-person makes sense considering how well the original game performed. Despite its troubled launch, Cyberpunk 2077 has sold an impressive 30 million copies by October 2024.
Like the original game, Project Orion will likely offer players the option to switch to third-person view while driving vehicles around the game world.
The job listing also hints at where the game currently stands in development. Project Orion appears to still be in pre-production, suggesting we won't see the final game anytime soon.
Furthermore, the Cyberpunk sequel might not enter full production until The Witcher 4 (codenamed Project Polaris) is closer to completion. Since The Witcher 4 only began full production around November 2024, it probably won't release until late 2027 at the earliest.
