An animated film based on Death Stranding will be penned by Aaron Guzikowski—best known for his work on Raised by Wolves.

The film is being developed by Kojima Productions in collaboration with animation studio Line Mileage, and it will explore a new narrative set within the unique and often surreal world created by Hideo Kojima.

This animated feature is part of a broader expansion of the Death Stranding universe, which also includes the upcoming Death Stranding 2: On the Beach and a live-action film in the works with A24.

As reported by Animation Magazine, the upcoming animated film is described as an “adult feature-length” project, and won’t just retell the events of the game—it will introduce an entirely new storyline grounded in the universe’s existing themes and tone.

Guzikowski shared his enthusiasm about joining the project, describing the world of Death Stranding as “creatively freeing, beautifully dark, and yet hopeful.” He also expressed admiration for Kojima’s storytelling, saying he’s honored to contribute to the ever-expanding narrative landscape of the franchise. “To finally get to play in this space is a dream come true,” he added.

This animated feature is not to be confused with the live-action film adaptation of Death Stranding currently in development with indie powerhouse A24. Kojima, in a recent interview with Vogue Japan, emphasized his intention to treat the live-action version as a unique cinematic work rather than a direct recreation of the game. He stated that the goal is to make a film that can stand alongside award-winning entries at Cannes or Venice, hinting at a more artistic approach.

As of now, there’s no official release window for the animated film or the live-action adaptation.
